Backcountry water can carry protozoa (giardia, cryptosporidium), bacteria, and — in some regions — viruses. One quick vocabulary note that decides everything below: a filter physically strains out protozoa and bacteria but not viruses; a purifier also handles viruses. In most of North America a filter is plenty; for international travel or heavily contaminated sources, you want a purifier.
1. Squeeze / hollow-fiber filter
The ultralight default. Water is pushed through a cartridge of microscopic hollow fibers that trap contaminants.
Gear needed: the filter plus a “dirty” pouch or bottle to squeeze from.
Pros: light, cheap, fast, no chemical taste; drink on the spot.
Cons: flow slows as it clogs (backflush it), doesn’t remove viruses, and freezing cracks the fibers.
The ultralight default and the most trusted filter on trail. Thread it onto the included pouch or a standard smartwater bottle, squeeze, and drink on the spot — no waiting, no chemicals. Backflush it to keep the flow fast, and never let it freeze. It doesn’t remove viruses. The lighter flip-top alternative is the Katadyn BeFree.
Turn the same hollow-fiber tech into a hands-free gravity system: fill the CNOC reservoir, hang it from a branch, and let physics filter liters while you set up camp. The best choice for groups or dry stretches where you want to batch a lot of water at once.
The lightest, cheapest treatment there is — a strip of tablets that weighs almost nothing, kills viruses as well as bacteria and protozoa, doesn’t freeze, and makes the perfect backup to a filter. The trade-off is a wait (up to ~4 hours for cryptosporidium) and it removes no sediment.
