Air, foam or self-inflating
Air pads are the lightest and thickest for their warmth but can puncture. Closed-cell foam is nearly indestructible and cheap, but bulky. Self-inflating pads sit in between, with foam inside an airtight shell.
How R-value works
R-value measures how well a pad stops the ground from pulling heat out of you. As a rough guide: 1 to 2 for summer, 3 to 4 for three seasons, 5 and up for winter. R-values add up when you stack two pads.
