What the temperature rating means
A quilt or bag's headline rating is usually its lower limit: the point where a warm sleeper stays safe, not comfortable. Most hikers choose a rating about 10°F below the coldest night they expect, and pair it with a pad warm enough for the ground.
Down or synthetic
Down is the lightest insulation for its warmth and packs smallest, but it loses loft when soaked. Synthetic fill is heavier and bulkier for the same rating, keeps more warmth when damp, and costs less.
