Frameless or framed
A frameless pack is the lightest, but it relies on a folded sleeping pad for structure and gets uncomfortable above roughly 20 to 25 pounds. A frame or stay moves the load onto your hips, which matters with heavy food and water carries. A removable frame lets you choose per trip.
How much capacity you need
Most ultralight hikers with a base weight under about 12 pounds carry 35 to 50 liters for a few days out, and 50 to 60 liters when carrying a week of food or winter layers. Bigger packs weigh more and invite you to fill them, so size to your gear, not your worries.
